About this calculator
Gravel for paths, driveways, patios and drainage, as cubic yards and tons, with weed fabric under it.
How it’s calculated
Volume = area × depth. Weight = volume × density (about 1.4 tons per cu yd for most gravel).
Worked example
With these inputs:
- Area shape
- Rectangle
- Length
- 20 ft
- Width
- 10 ft
- Depth
- 3 in
- Material
- Crushed stone (#57)
- Extra for settling / compaction
- 5%
the result is:
- Volume
- 1.94 cu yd
- Area
- 200 sq ft
- Approx. weight
- 2.7 tons
- 0.5 cu ft (50 lb) bags
- 105 bags
Tips from the trade
- 2–3" for paths; 4–6" over a compacted base for driveways.
- Edging stops gravel creeping into lawns and beds.
- Suppliers sell by weight, so always check the weight figure.
