About this calculator
Count bricks for a wall from its size, with mortar quantities. Covers US modular, standard, queen and king bricks in single or double thickness.
How it’s calculated
Each brick, together with its share of mortar joint, covers one module of wall face. A modular brick with a ⅜" joint covers 8" × 2⅝", giving about 6.86 bricks per sq ft. A double-thickness wall doubles the count.
Worked example
With these inputs:
- Wall length
- 30 ft
- Wall height
- 4 ft
- Openings area
- 0 sq ft
- Brick size
- Modular 7⅝ × 2¼
- Wall thickness
- Single wythe
- Bricks per 80 lb mortar bag
- 36
- Waste allowance
- 5%
the result is:
- Bricks needed
- 864 bricks
- Wall area (net)
- 120 sq ft
- Mortar mix bags (80 lb)
- 24 bags @ 36 bricks/bag
Tips from the trade
- 5% waste is normal for new brick. Use 10% for reclaimed brick or a lot of cutting.
- Buy every brick for one wall at the same time. Different batches can vary in colour.
- Mortar use varies a lot with the mason and the joint. Treat the bag count as a guide.
