About this calculator
Add VAT to a net price, or remove it from a gross price.
How it’s calculated
Gross = net × (1 + rate). Net = gross ÷ (1 + rate). Don’t just subtract the rate from the gross figure: removing 20% from a VAT-inclusive price gives the wrong answer.

Tips from the trade
- The standard VAT rate is 20%. Some building work, such as certain energy-saving installations, can qualify for a reduced or zero rate.
