About this calculator
Cladding takeoff for timber, composite or fibre cement boards, with battens at 600 mm, breather membrane and fixings.
How it’s calculated
Area = wall length × height + gables − openings. Boards = area × (1 + waste) ÷ (exposure × board length). Battens are run vertically at 600 mm centres behind horizontal boards.
Worked example
With these inputs:
- Wall length to clad
- 20 m
- Wall height
- 2.4 m
- Gable ends
- 2
- Gable width
- 6 m
- Gable height
- 2 m
- Openings area
- 4 m²
- Number of openings (doors + windows)
- 10
- Outside corners
- 4
- Board exposure / cover width
- 125 mm
- Board length
- 4.8 m
- Waste allowance
- 10%
the result is:
- Boards needed
- 103 boards
- Net wall area
- 56 m²
Tips from the trade
- Use the exposed face (exposure or cover width), not the full board width.
- Ventilate behind the cladding at the top and bottom of the cavity.
